To waive the English language requirement students must present transcripts to indicate that they have studied for the last three years (full-time) in a secondary school, college or university in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States or any country in which the primary language is English and where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution is exclusively English. Students may also present proof of an international diploma like the International Baccalaureate.

Students who cannot demonstrate three years in an English-medium school as outlined above must submit a language test result.

Should applicants' language test scores fall below the listed cut-offs, they may still be eligible for admission to Carleton's Foundation program. The Foundation program allows students to earn academic credits while completing English requirements for full-time study. The program is composed of three courses that are geared toward helping students develop their English language skills. Students who successfully complete the Foundation program will be eligible for full-time degree studies.
